Title of Talk:
"Self-Healing" Design of RF and mm-Wave Systems on Chip

Speaker:
Prof.Mohammed Ismail
WSU

Abstract of Talk:
To achieve the highest performance/price ratios of handheld wireless devices, the current trends in wireless chip set development call for a programmable cognitive-like multi-standard nanometer CMOS radios integrated on a single chip. This represents a grand challenge to both the yield and validation of such chip sets and typically requires several silicon spins which will increase the NRE development costs and may result in significant product delays and in missing important market windows. To meet this challenge we present design techniques for “self-awareness” and “self-healing” of multi-band, multi-mode CMOS radio systems and demonstrate the validity of these techniques in the design of LTE CMOS radio front ends. Moreover, we will discuss the evolution of the wireless technology and chipsets beyond 3G as well as the basic principles of zero-IF CMOS multi-band, multi-mode radios from antenna to bits. Finally, time permitting; We will also present a compact transceiver architecture suitable for TDD radio systems. The transceiver architecture will be developed and augmented with self-test capabilities and digital self-calibration routines for firstpass silicon and for yield enhancement.

Title of Talk:
Challenges for Electronics Design in the Nano-Scale

Speaker:
Prof.Yehea Ismail
AUC and Zewail City of Science and Technology

Abstract of Talk:
Semiconductor technologies exhibited explosive growth in complexity and speed over the last two decades. Since the early 1980s, the device sizes have scaled down from few micrometers to tens of Nano-meters and the operating frequencies have increased from a few megahertz to several gigahertz. Also, the spacing between devices and interconnect have dramatically decreased due to the continuous scaling down of the technology feature size. These trends have led to issues and challenges in the design and analysis of high performance integrated circuits that previous generations did not exhibit. Most of these issues are at the circuit and interconnect (physical) levels. Also, these issues are expected only to increase in importance in future generations of integrated circuits. This talk will overview the most important challenges for electronics design in the nano-scale.
