Abstract of Talk：
The path from conception to realization of a human-ready device for the treatment of visual impairment is long and difficult. This presentation presents the current status of a novel, 99 channel neural prosthesis that is placed within the supra-choroidal space of the eye. The aim of this work is to restore rudimentary vision to people suffering from degenerative disorders of the retina and can receive no significant benefit from alternative therapies. The fundamental design of the implant, the regulatory environment, and technological hurdles that have been and remain to be overcome before a first-in-human study is justified will be explored during the presentation.
