Title of Talk:
Low-Power Wireless Biosensors with Artificial Intelligence (AI)– some examples of their clinical relevance and applications

Speaker:
Prof. Donald Y.C. Lie
Texas Tech University, USA

Abstract of Talk:
Prof. Donald Lie's research interests on biomedical applications focus on using power-efficient RF/analog circuits and SoC design techniques to help resolve interdisciplinary clinical problems. Prof. Lie will discuss several custom low-lower wireless sensors designed by his team with Artificial Intelligence (AI), and their potential clinical relevance and applications. For example, due to the serious concerns of fall risks for patients with balance disorders, Dr. Lie's team has developed a custom wearable wireless sensor system that can objectively identify patients with vestibular disorders in real-time dynamic gait testing using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and/or ANN (Artificial Neural Network) classifiers from features extracted on the raw gait data. Dr. Lie’s team also designed a custom low-cost and intelligent RFID handwashing monitoring compliance system for reducing hospital acquired infections (HAI) and completed a year-long clinical trial at TTUHSC's Surgery Clinics. Dr. Lie's group also designed a world's 1st phased-array Doppler-based noncontact vital signs and motion monitoring sensor system, capable of automatic beamsteering to intelligently track long-term heart and respiration rates. Dr. Lie's team also developed novel ultralow-power analog front-end (AFE) IC for an implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD). Dr. Lie’s team reported excellent wireless power transfer unto 100x100 mm coils on silicon using the Strongly Coupled Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) technique targeting for implantable devices and biosensors. Dr. Lie will conclude with a critical biomarker: EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor), as the “Asian’s biomarker” for never-smoker's non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.
