Development of printing techniques to deposit retinal cells

Abstract of Talk:
Bioprinting is the combination of 3D printing and biology. There are suites of bioprinting technologies that allow controlled deposition of living cells into pre-designed locations to fabricate complex structures that mimic the physiological environment. The human retina is a tissue composed of multiple cell types arranged specifically to provide sight. Implants such as a bio-subretinal chip are designed to mimic basic photoreceptor cells to detect light and can provide a new strategy to treat patients with age related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) related blindness. Since the main role of a subretinal chip is to provide electrical stimulation under light, the integration and positioning of cells onto subretinal chips become an important challenge that determines the outcome of an implant. This project aims to develop a customised printing technique to deposit retinal cells accurately onto subretinal chips using microvalve printing. Preliminary results indicated that human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells showed good viability and further implantation is required to minimise droplet size and spreading.
